Women Crushing It Wednesday: Pamela Mitchell of Hip Hop Scholars

January 9, 2019

By Erin Thibeau

This week's Women Crushing It Wednesday episode highlights a teacher celebrating hip hop culture. Poet Taylor got to know Pamela Mitchell, the founder of Hip Hop Scholars, a competition for young hip hop fans to show off their knowledge.

Mitchell says the program is an effective way to bring together kids and their parents and also get students interested in math or science trivia down the line. She recalls in 2012 watching a young dad tell his son all about the Dr. Dre's "The Chronic." That's when she decided to expand her idea.

So what's next? Mitchell hopes to hold a competition at Howard University at the end of the school year, where DMV students 12 and older (and adults!) can compete.

Watch Mitchell discuss the program and her background in education in the full interview above, and learn more about Hip-Hop Scholars at HHSGames.com.

Every week, WPGC's Poet highlights a woman making it happen for her video series "Women Crushing It Wednesday."
