Activist, rapper, and writer Boots Riley can now add "director" to the list with his directorial debut "Sorry to Bother You." The movie hits theaters on Friday, and it already has rave reviews and a 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Set in Oakland, California, the movie stars Lakeith Stanfield ("Atlanta") as Cassius Green, a black telemarketer who perfects a white accent to hit it big time at his job.

It also stars Tessa Thompson, Jermaine Fowler, Omari Hardwick, Terry Crews, Patton Oswalt, David Cross, Danny Glover, Steven Yeun, and Armie Hammer.

Riley sat down with Poet at Busboys & Poet's to talk about making the movie.

"So this movie, there's nobody in it that is all the way clean, and that's how it really is in life," Riley said.

Has the director ever used his "white voice"? "Definitely," he said, "it might be calling the electric company."

Riley also praised Stanfield's performance. "He's able to make himself vulnerable," he said, "and that performance is something that grounds the whole movie."

Catch "Sorry to Bother You" in theaters on Friday, July 6.
