More than 4,300 students and teachers from D.C.-area schools in underserved communities were given the chance to see the wildly popular Broadway musical "Hamilton" at the Kennedy Center – all thanks to the Hamilton Education Program.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History's program involved more than just a matinee. The students had spent weeks studying American history through a special curriculum about Alexander Hamilton and the Founding Fathers.

Students from various schools performed their own original works, from rap songs to scenes to monologues, based on their studies on the Kennedy Center stage. They also got to participate in a Q&A with cast members from "Hamilton."

WPGC's Poet spoke with some of these students during the two-day program in September.
