NASA Renames Street 'Hidden Figures Way' to Honor Unsung Mathematicians

June 12, 2019

The District’s E Street Southwest is no more.

On Wednesday, NASA renamed the street “Hidden Figures Way” to recognize the three black women mathematicians features in the film. The D.C. City Council in December approved legislation to rename the street.

The name change honors Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, who were also featured in Margot Lee Shetterly’s Book “Hidden Figures: The Untold True Story of Four African-American Women who Helped Launch Our Nation Into Space.”

The women’s contributions helped facilitate space travel.

“Today is a celebration of African-American pioneers,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said during the renaming ceremony. “
