Controversial 'Slave Play' Heads To Broadway

July 16, 2019

The controversial “Slave Play” is headed to Broadway.

After debuting off-Broadway, the show that tells the tale of six residents at the MacGregor Plantation will appear from Sept. 10 to Oct. 6.

The show depicts three interracial couples who turn to interracial therapy, the New York Daily News reported. Some viewers have considered the play racist.

An online petition to prevent the show from any further performances has 4,459 signatures toward its goal of 5,000.

“I wanted to verbalize that this was one of the most disrespectful displays of anti-Black sentiment disguised as art that I have ever seen,” the petition says.

Jeremy Harris wrote the play at Yale’s School of Drama. It was recognized with the Paula Vogel Award in 2018 and the Rosa Parks Playwriting Award.
