Southeast D.C. has its very first Whole Foods!

Dubbed "Whole Foods South Capitol Hill," the supermarket opened to much fanfare on Thursday, October 18. A line formed well before the doors opened at 9 a.m., with shoppers clutching free gift cards that were handed out for the new location.

Our own Joe Clair was broadcasting live from the grand opening, where he learned about the small local businesses whose products are featured in the new location.

Kathleen Wood, who sources locally produced goods to stock at the store, told Joe the process is called "foraging."

"We go out and find small, local brands, we test their products, and then we invite them to sell their products at our stores and we sort of support them in that process," Kathleen told Joe.

Check out some of these DMV goods, which are all labeled "local" so that they're easy to find, below:

Next up, Joe spoke with Chef Kwame Onwuachi, a "Top Chef" alum whose serves modern Afro-Caribbean food at his restaurant at The Warf, Kith and Kin.

The chef has opened a new fast-casual restaurant called Philly Wing Fry inside the new Whole Foods.

"I wanted to pair the best foods together: cheesesteaks, chicken wings and waffle fries," he said. The ribeye is dry aged for 50 days, the bread is sourced locally, the fries are tossed in an Ethiopian spice blend, and the result is mouthwatering.

"We just put a little love into all the ingredients there," he said. Watch the chef describe his process for making the sandwich.

The fifth D.C. location of Whole Foods is now open at 101 H St. in Southeast D.C.
