It's National HIV Testing Day: Here's Where to Get Tested for Free

June 27, 2018

By Erin Thibeau

Wednesday marks National HIV Testing Day, and WPGC is working to raise awareness at free testing sites in the DMV.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that one in seven people who are infected with HIV don't know it. More than 90 percent of all new infections could be prevented by proper testing and connecting HIV-positive people with the right care.

D.C. has a rate of 55.6 HIV diagnoses per 100,000 people, while Maryland has 21.7 and Virginia has 12.6.

If you have HIV, getting medical care and taking the right drugs regularly will help you live a longer, healthier life; it also lowers the chance of passing it on to others.

WPGC's Joe Clair will be with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation at the Temple Hills Health Center – 4302 Saint Barnabas Road, Suite B, Temple Hills, Maryland – from 4 to 7 p.m. You can find more info here.

Poet will repping WPGC in the District at Beat the Street, with Sasha Bruce and MPD – 14th and Clifton Streets Northwest  – starting at 3:30 p.m.

To find free testing sites near you via the CDC, enter your zip code here.

You can also get tested for free at Walgreens on National HIV Testing Day. Counselors will be on hand at participating stores around the DMV from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. to provide free HIV testing and information about prevention options – including PrEP, the pill to prevent HIV.
