D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser is a new mom!

Bowser surprised many on Monday night when she announced her adoption of a newborn baby, making her the first single mother to serve as mayor of the District.

"It is with great joy and excitement that I share with you that late last year, I decided to begin the adoption journey," Bowser, who is 45, tweeted. "I was not sure how long it would take, and to my delight, it advanced much sooner than I expected. So today, I am proud to announce that I am a mom!" she tweeted.

"Because of the great team we have, I don't expect we'll miss a beat," Bowser promised her constituents.

The mayor, who is very private, did not share the baby’s gender, name, age or photo with the media.

In an interview with WUSA 9, Bowser said, "I decided to start the adoption journey, just knowing that it was a great time in my life and I had so much to share with a baby."

"When you sit in the seat that I'm in, you're used to being able to make things happen and babies have a way of letting you know that they're in control," she continued. "I'm really just looking forward to being able to pour a lot of love and attention and affection on a baby and help the baby grow into a wonderful Washingtonian."

Congratulations to the new mom!
