Dave Chappelle on Michelle Wolf's WHCD Remarks: 'She Nailed It'

May 1, 2018

"Daily Show" correspondent Michelle Wolf has received a show of support from Dave Chappelle after her routine at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner speech drew heavy criticism.

Wolf unapologetically ripped into Donald Trump and also joked about Sarah Huckabee Sanders’s makeup.

"It's 2018 and I'm a woman, so you cannot shut me up — unless you have Michael Cohen wire me $130,000," Wolf joked.

"I actually really like Sarah. I think she’s very resourceful. She burns facts, and then she uses that ash to create a perfect smoky eye. Like maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s lies. It’s probably lies," Wold continued on Sanders.

Speaking on PBC NewsHour, Chappelle says he really respected what he saw from Wolf.

Check out Chapelle's full statement on the speech below:

"I don't know who those people think they are that she--she can't say that to them, cause they offend people all the time. And I think that for many people, not everybody who watched it, but for many people, it's cathartic to watch that woman speak truth to power like that. Whether they understand it or not, there was an enormous amount of levity in what she did. But it was very flat-footed and it was grounded in her truth and whether I agree with it or not, I gotta respect the artistry. I gotta respect the gangsta. I know how hard it is to do what she did in front of that lame ass crowd. And I think she nailed it.  I thought it was beautiful. And I didn't see her pander once."

Trump was absent from the dinner for the second consecutive year. Instead, Trump took shots at the dinner at a rally in Michigan.

"Is this better than that phony Washington White House Correspondents' Dinner? Is this more fun?" Trump asked the crowd.

Even though she's under a lot of scrutinty, getting a cosign from one of the greatest comedian's of all time has to feel good for Wolf. Late-night hosts Seth Meyers, Trevor Noah, and Stephen Colbert have also come out in defense of Wolf.
