Busboys and Poets Opens in Anacostia

March 12, 2019

Residents in the District’s Ward 8 don’t have many sit-down restaurant options, paving the way for Anacostia’s newest restaurant to draw plenty of attention.

Busboys and Poets, a staple throughout Maryland, D.C. and Virginia that highlights local artists and features a separate bookstore, is opening its Anacostia location for dinner Tuesday night. It will become one of few restaurants where customers in the area can sit for a meal, Washington City Paper reported.

The Anacostia location is the restaurant’s seventh. Owner Andy Shallal has several in the District, one in Hyattsville, Maryland, and another in Virginia’s Shirlington neighborhood.

In addition to branding itself as a full-service restaurant, bookstore, event space and hospitality training center, the Anacostia Busboys and Poets is “part of an innovative city-supported project at the new home of the Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative,” according to a promotional flier.

The collaborative aims to solve some of Ward 8’s community-wide issues, which include violence and crime. It also owns the building that houses the new Busboys and Poets, DCist reported.

The Anacostia location will hire more than 80 local residents, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said.

The restaurant’s hours haven’t yet been posted.
