Kehlani on Womanhood, Musical Influences and Donald Trump (Watch)

Kehlani came through WPGC to talk about everything from her new music to the election with DJ Flexx. The R&B singer-songwriter’s hit “CRZY” is currently lighting up the airwaves.

Originally from Oakland, California, she used to be in the teen pop group, PopLyfe, which was a finalist on “America’s Got Talent.”

Kehlani released her first mixtape, “Cloud 19,” in 2014, and her second mixtape, “You Should Be Here,” helped her nab a nomination for the Best Urban Contemporary Album Grammy award in 2016.

After a tumultuous past year, writing new music has been a “breath of fresh air” for Kehlani. She told Flexx her current project is a chance to “express my womanhood.”

For Kehlani, the project is all about “accepting all parts of being a woman,” and “going against the grain of what people tell us we can and cannot be.”

The singer also revealed what artists have inspired her music over the years, from India.Arie to TLC.

Growing up in a teen pop group, Kehlani is a born stage performer. She said she’s take the stage over the studio any day.

As for her choice in November’s election, Kehlani said Trump “puts fear into my heart,” and encouraged voters to shut down any possibility of a Trump presidency.
