How do you balance fame and faith? Grammy-winning gospel and R&B singer BeBe Winans came on The Joe Clair Morning Show on Friday to answer that question.

Winans released several albums, first with his sister CeCe and later as a solo artist, that won him popularity among gospel fans and beyond.

“It has everything to do with my upbringing,” he said of that balance. “My father said to us, ‘Know who you are before you leave here.’ And so when things started happening for us, you know, it was easy to accept it because I knew who I was. And I think that, to me, is what gave me the knowledge of how to handle success over in the secular market and still be true to who I was.”

It wasn’t easy to be “misunderstood,” Winans said, as he and his sister’s music was being played everywhere. “We were getting beat up by the Christians and the churches…It was quite crazy.”

“It was okay,” he said, “because I knew who I was.”

A new play at Arena Stage tells the story of Winans’ legendary career. “Born for This: The BeBe Winans Story” is playing until August 28.

Watch Winans, Director Charles Randolph-Wright, and Jeannie Jones discuss “Born for This” below.
