The road to producing a biopic on late R&B singer Aaliyah hasn’t been an easy one for the Lifetime Network.
Aaliyah: Princess of R&B, based on Christopher Farley’s biography Aaliyah: More Than a Woman, was originally going to feature actress/singer Zendaya Coleman (“Replay,” Disney’s Shake It Up), but she dropped out after a series of production issues and was replaced by Nickelodeon actress Alexandra Shipp.
Some of the issues the production has experienced include the difficulties in procuring the rights to Aaliyah’s music. Aaliyah’s family were not in favor of the made-for-TV movie.
But now, the film has an air date — Nov. 15 — and Lifetime is now giving a brief 15-second clip of Shipp as Aaliyah.
