Howard University Shows Support for Mike Brown

In a story that has made it far beyond the walls of Ferguson, Mo., the fatal shooting of Mike Brown has many members of the black community taking a stand against police violence.

This week, the #IfTheyGunnedMeDown hashtag went viral, showing side-by-side photos of people – one where they’re partying or being “stereotypical” and one where they’re graduating college or serving the country. The campaign was to raise awareness of the media’s use of demeaning photos for minorities in news stories.

Now, Howard University is adding to the support, joining to the “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” protest. According to witnesses of the Saturday shooting, Brown put his hands up as he walked away from the police car, yet the cop still found him aggressive.

“Howard University takes a stand for justice! #BisonNation #DontShoot #HU,” the Instagram post says as hundreds of students put their hands in the air.

On Saturday, 18-year-old Mike Brown lost his life after a cop shot him during an altercation.  Witness stories are clashing on details, but police say they stopped Brown in the street and told him to use the sidewalk.  When he didn’t listen, the cop says he tried to get out of the car and Brown shoved him back in and reached for the officer’s gun.

A friend of Brown’s, who was with him, has a different story.  He says the cop pulled up so close to them that when he tried to open the door, it hit the boys and bounced back.  The officer found the motion aggressive and reached out of the window and tried to pull him in.

The investigation is still on-going.

Howard University will also hold a vigil for Brown on Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. at the flagpole.
