WPGC celebrated the late singer Marvin Gaye’s 75th birthday on April 2 at Marvin’s on 14th and U Street hosted by radio personality Guy Lambert from the Pablo Morning Show.

Special guests included members Marvin’s younger sister Zeola Gaye, younger brother Antwaun Gay (who had never met Marvin), The Marquees (the doo-wop group Marvin Gaye sang with in the 1950s), singer Barsheem, rock band U.S. Royalty, guitarist Gordon Banks and more.

People shed tears as they heard Gaye’s music on the rooftop of Marvin’s (the restaurant named after the singer).

Zeola Gaye said, “I’m elated by the love that is still shown [for] Marvin today and year-round.” The love [is] overwhelming.”

Marvin’s brother, Antwaun Gay explained, “Being here just [feels] like a reunion because I met my niece and nephews here, Marvin’s children.  He said, “I was considered the other child, so I never got to meet my brother Marvin.”

Since his death in 1984, Gaye has been posthumously honored with a GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Gaye, a native Washingtonian, was best known for hits, “Sexual Healing”, “What’s Going On”, Let’s Get It On” and many more.

The Marvin Gaye celebration benefitted the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.  Marvin Gaye was fatally shot by his father one day before his 45th birthday.
