Juicy J is no amateur when it comes to the music industry, having been part of the highly successful rap trio, Three 6 Mafia, for nearly 20 years. Now, the “Bandz a Maker Her Dance” rapper is going solo and collaborating with some of the biggest names in the industry.
Aladdin and Tony Redz caught up with Juicy J as he was swinging through the DMV before his show at the Howard Theatre.
They asked him about the loss of good friend and Three 6 Mafia member, Lord Infamous, who passed away on Dec. 20, 2013. He admits he tries to keep his legacy alive through their favorite pastime: music.
It’s the music that fuels the now-solo rapper. “I’m always in the studio and it comes from the heart,” he admits when asked about his key to success. He attributes his success to constantly producing and releasing music. “Be original and do your own thing,” he insists. “Keep working. If it don’t work, keep trying.”
It was his hard work that got him on the highly successful “Dark Horse” track with Katy Perry. Producer Dr. Luke broke the news to J that Perry wanted his vocals on the track, which he immediately jumped on.
“[Dr. Luke] sent the record over, I did the verse and a week later she was in town,” he recalls. Soon, they met at the studio and she took the reigns on production, mixing and sequence.
