Every day during the month of February, WPGC will feature an important moment in Black history. These daily vignettes are read by local children in the District and surrounding areas.
On Feb. 26, 1928, Antoine “Fats” Domino was born in New Orleans, La. The pianist was most known for his music styles of mixing R&B and traditional saxophone, drums, piano, bass, guitar and more. During his career, Domino had five gold-selling albums and 35 hits that made it on to the Top 40 charts.
When his first record label was sold to ABC, they relocated the singer to Nashville, changing his sound and ultimately curtailing his career. Though he recorded steadily into the 1960s, he didn’t see much success.
Domino still is a frequent figure at local jazz festivals in New Orleans and is known these days for his bright pink Cadillac he drives around the city.Comments
