Feb 23: Frank E. Petersen Becomes the First Black Marine Corps General

Every day during the month of February, WPGC will feature an important moment in Black history.  These daily vignettes are read by local children in the District and surrounding areas.

On Feb. 23, 1979, Frank E. Petersen was named the first African-American general in the United States Marine Corps. Petersen was also the first African-American Marine Corps aviator. The general served 38 years in the Marines and became highly decorated, earning the title of “Silver Hawk” and “Gray Eagle.”
