Feb. 22: DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince Win First Rap GRAMMY

Every day during the month of February, WPGC will feature an important moment in Black history.  These daily vignettes are read by local children in the District and surrounding areas.

On Feb. 22, 1950, Dr. J, Julius Winfield Erving, was born in Roosevelt, N.Y.  Erving is an esteemed basketball player known for a unique style of play that focused on leaping and playing above the rim.  He helped legitimize the American Basketball Association and was among the most famous when it merged with the National Basketball Association.

On Feb. 22, 1989, Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff won the first ever GRAMMY award for best hip-hop/rap song. Their single “Parents Just Don’t Understand” skyrocketed the duo to fame, making them a household name in the MTV world.  While their win was met with mixed reviews among the music community, it propelled them into more fame.  With Smith’s acting fame, he used his show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as a way to promote the song, having it play in several of the episodes.
