Every day during the month of February, WPGC will feature an important moment in Black history. These daily vignettes are read by local children in the District and surrounding areas.
On Feb. 15, 1978, Leon Spinks defeated Muhammad Ali for the heavyweight boxing championship, which became the biggest upset in boxing history. Unfortunately, his title was stripped seven months later when he refused to defend his title against Ken Norton. Spinks wanted to fight Ali for a second time, instead. He ended up battling Ali in an unapproved match, which he lost. The first match was one of the few where Ali left the ring beaten and bruised in the face.
