Feb. 13: Rube Foster Founded the Negro Baseball League

Every day during the month of February, WPGC will feature an important moment in Black history.  These daily vignettes are read by local children in the District and surrounding areas.

On Feb. 13, 1920, Rube Foster founded the Negro Baseball League. Foster played on five different teams from his early years as a baseball player, beginning in 1902. Just 18 years later, after a highly successful career in baseball, Foster and seven other midwestern clubs met to form the Negro Baseball League, the first African-American baseball league.

While many people thought Foster made the league as a way to favor his personal baseball team, many reports showed that he would always make sure other leagues made payroll, sometimes taking money out of his own pocket.
