D. Floyd Celebrates 30 Years of Go-Go With Black Carpet Affair

LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — This Saturday, The Howard Theatre will host the Black Carpet Affair celebrating D.C. native D. Floyd’s 30 years of musical contributions on the Go-Go Scene.

A graduate of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Floyd is an accomplished saxophone player who has performed alongside the legendary Chuck Brown and collaborated with Doug E. Fresh, Heavy D. and Redman.

WPGC’s DJ Flexx talked to Floyd in anticipation of the anniversary event.

“It’s scary that time goes by because unfortunately you can’t get it back but, you know, if I had to do it all over again I’d do it exactly the same way,” Floyd said.

When asked about the secret to his longevity, Floyd said he has a “love affair with… the greatest beat in the history of the world,” meaning Go-Go. “When you find the right partner you stay with them, and this beat has been my partner.”

Even though he’s a legend himself, Floyd recalls feeling faint during his first performance with the late, great Godfather of Go-Go, Chuck Brown.

“I really had to just slow all the way down and gather myself,” he said. “Until the day he died, man, I just had so much respect for pops. And even when he would sit me down and talk to me, it was almost like the voice of God.”

In talking about his idols, he said he got his sense of showmanship from those who came before him.

“Everything was a show back then and I just loved it and I just never fell out of love… We’ve got quite a show planned for Saturday… I’m trying to keep it a surprise but it’s very difficult right now.”
