Naomi Sims: The First Black Supermodel

LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC/WPGC) — Naomi Sims was widely credited as the first African American supermodel.

Sims, a pioneer in the “Black is Beautiful” movement, was shown on covers of mainstream magazines such as Ladies’ Home Journal and Life in the late 1960’s.

After retiring from modeling, Sims started her own wig company, which turned into a multimillion-dollar endeavor. She also went on to author several books on health and beauty.

She died of breast cancer in 2009.
