Alicia Keys, Keyshia Cole, Janelle Monae Rock On At “Black Girls Rock”

Alicia Keys isn’t just an R&B and Pop singer, she’s a “Rock Star.” The Black Girls Rock celebration affirmed Keys’ “rock star” status with a celebrity-rich award ceremony.

Some big names in entertainment represented Saturday (October 13) night at the Loews Paradise Theatre in New York City for the 2012 Black Girls Rock. The annual event, founded by DJ Beverly Bond to empower and mentor women of color, attracted such names as Meagan Good, Taraji P. Henson, and Eva Longoria.

This year’s installment was co-hosted by actresses Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King. Standout performances included Ciara, who unveiled a new song off of her upcoming album One Woman Army with some help from hip-hop icon Missy Elliott.

R&B stunner Keyshia Cole sang her current single, “Trust and Believe,” while music superstar Keys belted out her track “Girl on Fire.”

But as with all Black Girls Rock celebrations, it’s all about the honorees. Pop-soul legend Dionne Warwick was given the “Living Legend” award while Keys received the “Rock Star” award. And alternative funk visionary Janelle Monae picked up the “Young, Gifted, & Black” award.—Keith Murphy, CBS Local
