Wyclef Jean has been a vocal advocate for President Obama in the past. The former Haitian presidential hopeful is now set to perform for a fundraiser at the Republican National Convention.

The event is sponsored by nonprofit organization “Got Your 6” and is being described as a non-partisan benefit for military veterans. The night will be hosted by Megan McCain, the daughter of 2008 Republican presidential nominee, John McCain. Republican governors and members of congress will also participate.

Clef takes the place of Randy Travis, who has dropped out due to a recent DUI arrest. Willie Nelson, who was also slatted to appear, was sidelined as a result of scheduling conflicts.

On the website, “Got Your 6″ describes its mission as “a campaign led by the entertainment industry that will help create a new conversation in America, one where veterans and military families are perceived as both leaders and civic assets.”

Musicians performing at political conventions is nothing new. At this years’ Republican Convention, Kid Rock and Lynyrd Skynyrd are also set to appear. While no musical guests have been announced for the upcoming September 4th Democratic Convention, soulful crooner John Legend performed at the 2008 event for future President Barack Obama. And during the 2004 Democratic Convention, the Black Eyed Peas took to the stage.

The Got Your 6 show takes place on August 29th. Wyclef will be releasing his memoir Purpose: An Immigrant’s Story on September 18. —Keith Murphy, CBS Local
