Nas’ heartfelt and personal account of fatherhood, as told through his song “Daughters,” shows another side of the rapper while offering a different viewpoint to parenting.

The video, which premiered Sunday (May 27), features Nas candidly recalling the triumphs and frustrations of raising his daughter, Destiny Jones. The song details 17-year-old Destiny’s own public stumbles on social media (On the second verse Nas actually addresses a real-life incident last February when his daughter showed off her condom collection on Twitter) as well as Nas’ own shortcomings as a father.

But what makes this Chris Robinson-directed clip shine is its perspective, told from the viewpoint of Destiny, from birth to her teenage years driving a car. [Spoiler Alert: His daughter even makes a surprise appearance at the end.]

According to Robinson, the first-hand account was given an enthusiastic thumbs-up by Nas.

“Right off the bat, he really loved the idea of the P.O.V.,” Robinson told MTV News. “I think that this song for Nas is so personal, everything in the song is real, that he wanted to share this moment with his fans, with the world, and it was actually his suggestion.”
