Associated Press reports that a “gunman opened fire inside a high school cafeteria at the start of the school day Monday, killing one student and wounding four others, authorities said.” A suspect, believed to be a student, was arrested.

The young suspect was arrested and taken into custody near his car about a half-mile from the Cleveland school according to the FBI. However, when asked about a possible motive for the shooting, FBI agent Scott Wilson refused to comment.

Commotion filled 1,100-student Chardon High School as gunfires broke out around 7:30 a.m.

AP reported Heather Ziska, 17, saying she was “in the cafeteria when she and other students heard popping noises in the hall. She said she saw a boy she recognized as a fellow student come into the cafeteria and start shooting.” She also said she and many other students “immediately ran outside, while other friends ran into a middle school and others locked themselves in a teachers’ lounge.”

Terror filled the halls and “everybody just started running…and screaming down the hallway.” said 17-year-old Megan Hennessy, who was in class when she heard the gunshots.

Officials have stated that five students were shot and taken to Cleveland-area hospitals. Unfortunately, one student later died, Police Chief Timothy McKenna said.

AP reported that the suspect “is a juvenile who was not immediately charged. His name was not released.”

We also do not know the conditions of the remaining wounded students.

The school day had already begun for tudents at the high school and the middle school when the shooting occurred. Nonetheless, all bus runs for elementary school children “were stopped,” and “all classes in the district were canceled.”

The high school students were taken to an elementary school, where their parents were told to pick them up.
