Wale Thru The Years All month long WPGC Salutes artists, athletes, and celebrities from the DMV. Today, we turn the spotlight on Olubowale Victor Akintimehin Folarin – better known as “Wale!”
Wale was born and raised in Northwest DC, the son of Nigerian immigrant parents who encouraged his love of Go Go Music and Hip Hop. He moved to Largo, Maryland in his teens, graduating from Quince Orchard High School in 2001, and later attended Robert Morris College and Virginia State University on football scholarships. He then enrolled in Bowie State University, eventually dropping out in 2004 to pursue music full time. Less than a year later, his debut mix tape, “Paint A Picture,” hit the street and he’s never looked back.
Wale is currently on a World Tour including stops in Britain, France, Holland, Germany and The Bahamas – light years away from the kid on Peabody Street in Northwest.
